Excerpt from Kammerspiel!
(Bare stage, lights, JONNY and ABE on a bench)
JONNY: What’s your opinion of me, anyhow?
ABE: A little overwhelmed, I began the generalized evasion which that question deserves.
JONNY: Well, I’m going to tell you something about my life
ABE: He interrupted
JONNY: I don’t want you to get a wrong idea of me – I’ll tell you God’s truth – My family all died and I came into a good deal of money.
ABE: And where did –
JONNY: Oxford man –
ABE: And why did –
JONNY: Daisy –
ABE: And where was –
JONNY: The Green light at the end of the dock.
ABE: That’s a great expression of yours, ain’t it? said Tom Sharply.
JONNY: What is?
ABE: All this ‘old sport’ business.
JONNY: You’re wife doesn’t love you – said Gatsby – she’s never loved you. She loves me. Gatsby sprang to his feet, vivid with excitement.
A MAN DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE HAS UNTIL HE LOSES IT
WHEN A MAN HAS THE LOVE OF A WOMAN HE ABUSES IT
I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I HAD WHEN I HAD MY OLD LOVE
I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I HAD TILL I SAID GOODBYE OLD LOVE
YES A MAN DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE HAS TILL IT IS NO LONGER AROUND
BUT THE HAPPY THOUGHT IS – WHATEVER IT IS HE’S LOST –
MAY SOMEDAY ONCE AGAIN BE FOUND
JONNY: Say Old Sport, why don’t we go for a ride in my Rolls Royce?
ABE: (Slow motion) We’re… in… your… Rolls… Royce… you… son-of-a biiiiiiiiiitch…
